Visiting Maharashtra anytime soon? Your trip to this beautiful land will be incomplete without investing into a pair of attractive Kolhapuri chappals. Whether you buy them as a souvenir or a gift for someone, the trendy Kolhapuri Chappals are a must-have footwear piece for all the trendsetters out there.
Kolhapuri Chappals are the iconic footwear pieces from villages in Maharashtra. They have a special place in the handicraft market of India. The famous leather sandals are designed to endure harsh conditions and terrains. Therefore, these are not just your average leather footwear. On the other hand, Kolhapuri chappals feature an interesting history to take pride in. The Story of the Famous Kolhapuri chappals The Kolhapuri chappals were first created in the village of Kapsi in Maharashtra. They were sold across the Meenakshi Temple in Kolhapur. This is how they derived the name. Traditionally, these footwear essentials were manufactured using vegetable dyes and buffalo leather without the use of any chemicals. It is believed that the first-ever Kolhapuri chappals were made by the Saudagar Family during 1920. The family then passed on its lineage to the local cobblers. One of the major characteristic features of the classic footwear sandals is that they are available as open-toed sandals with two-side flaps and a T-strap. The presence of flaps in the sandals represents ears. Therefore, these are also known as ‘Kanwali’ in the local language. While the original chappals were designed to be simple and functional, modern designs come with a touch of fashion with the inclusion of embellishments -including tassels, zari, stones, and so more.
